Project information: Lot 1 (Site 5) of the Lyon-Turin High-Speed Railway Base Tunnel is a key segment of the 57.5 km Mont Cenis Base Tunnel, designed to enhance rail connectivity between France and Italy. This section involves constructing a 21.9 km twin-tube tunnel, with approximately 18 km excavated towards Turin using two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), and about 3.7 km excavated towards Lyon using traditional methods such as demolition hammers and/or drill and blast techniques. Cross passages are established every 333 meters between the two tunnels, along with bypasses, niches, and cross tunnels to ensure safety and operational efficiency.
